Leadership Study Mission is the Chamber’s annual community development initiative in which community leaders study best practices in another city on a variety of timely topics identified as regional priorities. This year’s Leadership Study Mission visit took place May 3-5 in Tampa, Florida. May 3 began with a session surrounding the history of Tampa and how Tampa developed into one of the most prosperous cities in Florida. The delegation also heard from leaders about balancing growth and prosperity for residents – including zoning, transportation and economic downturns. The first day ended with a keynote address from Mayor Jane Castor aboard the Yacht Star Ship.
Day two began with focusing on one of the Chamber’s top priorities: education. The delegates heard from leaders who emphasized the importance of business partnerships in schools and how Tampa utilizes an evidence-based approach to assemble and analyze workforce development initiatives. Continuing with the top of talent development, delegates also heard from a panel of experts who are leading the way in retaining military talent in the Tampa region. With 400 soldiers transitioning from active duty each month from Fort Campbell, it’s vital we learn from communities who are retaining military talent. Delegates also learned about cultivating housing and community for Tampa’s most vulnerable population from a panel of experts in the public and private sectors. Day two ended with four concurrent breakout sessions: tours of MacDill Air Force Base, Embarc Collective, and Metropolitan Ministries, and a water and walking tour of the riverwalk redevelopment.
The final day of Leadership Study Mission began with a panel discussion around the vibrant sports culture in Tampa, also known as ‚”Champa Bay.” Delegates also heard from LEAP Tampa Bay, which aims to increase the number of working age adults in the region. The group ended Leadership Study Mission at Columbia Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in the state of Florida. The final group session was about the Gas Worx development and how Tampa continues to activate their waterfront.
