Who is Adrienne Speaks with a Smile, and what should we know about you?

The owner and keynote of Adrienne Speaks with a Smile, I, Adrienne Slaughter, have been speaking to audiences, small and large, of all ages and from all backgrounds, for over 40 years. Fascinating audiences, I share my outstanding passion for life after unbelievably surviving two near-death experiences—bone cancer when I was 14 and a horrific car accident just two years later. Called a “miracle,” I live life to its fullest while empowering, inspiring, and motivating audiences. Traveling globally, I captivate listeners with my energetic positivity and “can-do attitude”—walking on an artificial leg. Proving that there is no limit to what we may achieve, I impact and make a meaningful difference in everyone I meet. As perseverance is powerful and smiles are contagious, my mission is to better the world around—with a smile.

What has been the most valuable aspect of your Chamber membership?

Very appreciably, I continue to benefit from its genuine comradery and true desire to connect me with opportunities locally in Nashville. The Chamber offers so many networking events, from ribbon-cuttings to mixers, and sincerely aims to “open doors” for me and my business.

Can you share a significant lesson you have learned as a business leader?

Yes. Flexibility is key. With so many diverse companies and potential clients, my own company must be flexible to enable positive business to business workmanship.

Are there new markets or demographics you are targeting?

Yes. While, in the past, I have commonly spoken to medical groups, doctors and nurses, corporate executives, and civic associations, I am excited to more actively enhance the lives of younger audiences, specifically teenagers. As both of my most difficult hurdles in life occurred when I was a teenager, I remember every detail and can truly relate to today’s teenagers’ challenges. With that, I have a special ability that other speakers don’t have, and I can really impact high school students in unforgettable, beneficial ways.

What is unique about your business that makes you stand out?

Lots of aspects, but notably two. First of all, I was flown around the Southeast in high school and college years, visiting struggling patients to give them confidence, hope, and faith. From my engaging with other children, adolescents, and adults going through challenges, both physical and mental, I have witnessed the difference their chosen attitude makes. With that experience, I know the benefits of a positive attitude and the detriments of a negative one. Secondly, the fact that I miraculously survived two near-death events is definitely unique. Yet, not only my survival stands out but also what I do with it today. My still playing tennis, my skiing on one leg, my will to prove any “doubters” wrong. I stress that every one who tries is still an achiever. And I am proof.

Can you share why the Nashville region is a good place to do business?

There are SO many reasons! Here are three: As a native of Atlanta, Georgia, I grew up in the wonderful midst of Southern hospitality and loved it! Now, after 30 years on the West Coast and Colorado, I am delighted to be back in the midst of the genuine friendliness. Everyone, like me, wants to engage positively and is welcoming and greets you with sincere smiles. Secondly, getting involved in the community has been easier than any place I’ve lived before (and I’ve lived in a lot of places!) The Chamber was the very first organization that I joined, and it continues to benefit me and my company. Nashville is growing so quickly and offers many opportunities for a speaker like myself. With its many small and large corporations, its many churches and religious groups, and especially its many high schools and teenage clubs, Nashville has open arms for Adrienne Speaks with a Smile.
