Position Description / Responsibilities

POSITION SUMMARY/ PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Director of Public Policy leads and implements the Chamber’s efforts in relationship-building, initiatives, programs, and lobbying in Metro Nashville/Davidson County to serve the Chamber’s strategic objectives. The Director of Public Policy leads special projects of significance at the Metro Nashville/Davidson County level on behalf of the Chamber including, but not limited to, creating the annual Metro legislative agenda, lobbying to the agenda and producing the annual Metro Council Legislative Scorecard. The Director of Public Policy provides assistance on State policy, livability, and other Chamber efforts as needed.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Leads development of the Chamber’s Metro policy agenda through implementing the annual policy survey of members, working with Chamber leadership across theaters, and accessing the political environment.
  2. Monitors and analyzes legislation and policy action impacting Metro Nashville/Davidson County to identify the impact on the Chamber’s ability to pursue its strategic objectives and provides policy expertise, analysis and development of solutions on issues at the Metro level.
  3. Lobbies the Metro Nashville/Davidson County Council to implement the policy agenda and advance the Chamber’s efforts.
  4. Produces the annual Metro Council Legislative Scorecard to access implementation of the policy agenda.
  5. Expands and deepens relationships with Metro Nashville/Davidson County partners including, but not limited to, elected and administrative officials, member volunteers, partner chambers and economic development entities, and non-profit and civic organizations to implement the Metro policy agenda and build the Chamber’s influence.
  6. Provides assistance to support the Policy Theater’s State policy, livability, and other efforts as needed.
  7. Participates in the development and monitoring of the Policy Theater budget to meet the Chamber’s Metro legislative goals.
  8. Participates in the Chamber’s revenue culture.

Position Requirements

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED:

  • Graduate of an accredited university. Advanced degree preferred but not required.
  • Three or more years of experience with a proven track record in public policy and/or government affairs.
  • Strong working knowledge of Metro Nashville/Davidson County legislative process.
  • Prior experience successfully managing a budget and generating revenue preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion for Middle Tennessee and a commitment to ensuring that business concerns are represented in Metro policy decisions.

SUPERVISION: This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Project Management LEADERSHIP AND/OR PARTICIPANT RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project management is a consistent and on-going aspect of this position. The Director of Public Policy works closely with the Chief Livability & Policy officer in developing and implementing projects, specific products and initiatives including, but not limited to, developing and leading projects and initiatives, selecting participants and recruiting volunteers, making assignments, developing timelines and budgets, identifying deliverables and tracking performance and results.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Typically sitting at a desk or table.
  • Occasionally lifting light objects (less than 24 pounds).
  • Intermittently walking, standing, bending and carrying.
  • Requires use of use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire regulations.
  • Manual dexterity, visual and auditory acuity needed.
  • Some repetitive motion is involved.
  • Work is performed in an office or computer room.
  • Work requires visits to businesses, elected officials and economic and Chamber partners in the Middle Tennessee region.
  • Position requires travel out of the Middle Tennessee region less than five percent of the time.
  • The Chamber is observing in-house safety protocols based on CDC, State and Metro Nashville/Davidson County guidance around COVID-19.
  • The Chamber does not currently have a teleworking policy. All staff work full-time in the office.
