Tell us about yourself.
I’m a father of four, spouse of a pediatrician, banker by trade, and a long-standing member of the 12 South community.
Tell us about your business/industry.
Banking is familiar to many, and styles of banking differ. My team builds personal relationships that extend the reach of our clients around the world. That’s important because banking in foreign countries is difficult, complex, and at times risky. HSBC is the only bank designed to lower these hurdles.
What should we know about you?
I dunked a basketball. Once. Only once. It was magic.
How did you get to your current position?
A combination of mutual friends and the city’s growth.
What value do you see in Chamber involvement?
The Chamber is an incredible advocate for the city, the broader community, and businesses throughout. They are truly an outstanding partner in every sense.
What do you enjoy most about being a leader?
The most enjoyable part of being a leader is the opportunity to be surrounded by talented and driven people who are committed to their own success and the success of those around them. No one achieves great things alone.
What makes Nashville a great place to do business?
I’ve always been struck by how welcoming the city has been throughout 20+ years of extraordinary growth. Nashville’s business community has its doors open. That openness fosters connectivity and lifts all of us higher. It makes doing business here a pleasure.
What is your outlook for the banking industry in Nashville?
Banking has been hit by shocks many times in my career: A.I. now and, of course, the pandemic, the GFC before that, and 9/11 and the dotcom crash. If there is one common thread, business leaders need to work with the best financial technology and strong bankers to ensure the safety, security, and execution of their financial goals. I expect we’ll see consolidation these next four years as these demands force banks to join forces to compete.
What are you currently reading?
I bounce back and forth between biographies and the sciences. I just finished Walter Isaacson’s biography of Einstein and have just started Outlive, by Dr. Attia. His goal is to outline what he calls “Medicine 3.0” and the new frontier for maintaining a long, healthy lifespan. As a longtime healthcare banker, it is a very interesting premise and one that, I suspect, will inform a great deal of innovation in healthcare in the coming decades. Likely a few new businesses in Nashville too.
