Tell us about yourself.
I’m Dan Kalman, and for the past 30 years, I’ve called Lee Company home. My journey here started in 1995 when I joined as one of just five service technicians. Today, as the President of Home Services, I lead our teams in Home Services and Marketing, ensuring we deliver top-tier solutions and an unmatched customer experience. But beyond the title, what truly defines me is my passion for service; both to our customers and to the incredible people I get to work with every day.

My story is a testament to the Lee Company mission: creating a workplace where employees can thrive. When I first started as a technician, I was eager to learn, grow, and contribute. I immersed myself in the daily operations, learning not just how to fix problems but how to innovate solutions. That mindset led me to take on leadership roles, first as Director of Home Services, then as Vice President in 2010, Senior Vice President in 2016, and eventually Executive Vice President of Service in 2019. This year, I stepped into my current role as President of Home Services, where I continue to shape the strategic vision of the company I’ve been proud to serve for three decades.

With 40 years in the industry, I’ve become familiar with every aspect of mechanical systems. But what I value most is more than technical knowledge; it’s the relationships. At Lee Company, we don’t just fix things; we build trust. We look beyond the immediate repair to find smarter, more effective solutions that truly benefit our customers. That’s the standard I set for myself and my team every single day.

While my career has been deeply rewarding, my greatest joy comes from my family. I’ve been married for 32 years, and together, my wife and I have raised two amazing daughters. Family is everything to me, and that includes my three “bonus” grandchildren who have added even more laughter and love to our lives. Of course, I can’t leave out the two smallest members of the Kalman crew — our Yorkies, Sully and Boo, who rule the house and keep us on our toes.

When I’m not at work, you can find me on the water. Boating isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a passion. There’s something about being on the lake that clears my mind and reminds me to enjoy the simple moments in life. Music is another big part of who I am. I always have a soundtrack playing in the background, whether I’m at home, on the boat, or on the road. And when it comes to sports? Hockey all the way.

At the end of the day, my role at Lee Company isn’t just about overseeing operations … it’s about inspiring people to be their best. I believe in leading by example, instilling a mindset of service and innovation in my team. I want every person who works here to see the same opportunity for growth I did all those years ago. Because at Lee Company, we build careers and we build futures.

Tell us about your business/industry.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my 40 years in this industry, it’s that we’re in the people business just as much as we’re in the service business. Whether it’s HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or facility maintenance, our job isn’t just to fix things. It’s to solve problems, provide peace of mind, and build lasting relationships with the customers who trust us with their homes and businesses.

At Lee Company, we serve a wide range of clients, from homeowners needing a quick repair to large facilities requiring complex, strategic solutions. The work we do keeps homes comfortable, businesses running, and essential infrastructure functioning. Without the services we provide, daily life as we know it wouldn’t be possible.

This industry has changed a lot since I first started as a technician. Technology has transformed how we approach service. Years ago, it was all about hands-on troubleshooting, and while that’s still a crucial skill, today, we use data, predictive analytics, and remote monitoring to prevent issues before they even start. At Lee Company, we’ve embraced tools like smart thermostats, remote diagnostics, and building automation systems that help customers save money and energy while keeping their systems running efficiently.

That’s a game-changer! And not just for our customers, but for our teams. We’re not just reacting to problems; we’re getting ahead of them. And that means fewer emergency calls, fewer unexpected breakdowns, and more cost-effective solutions.

But even with all this technology, one thing remains the same: the need for skilled professionals who can apply their expertise with care and precision. You can have all the advanced tools in the world, but if you don’t have the right people using them, they won’t make a difference.

One of the biggest challenges facing our industry today is the need for skilled tradespeople. There’s a growing demand for HVAC technicians, electricians, plumbers, and maintenance professionals, yet fewer young people are entering the trades. That’s why at Lee Company, we invest in training and career development. Through our apprenticeship programs and Lee Company University, we’re building the next generation of industry leaders.

If you’re someone looking for a career with stability, opportunity, and real impact, this is it. Skilled trades aren’t just jobs; they’re careers that provide a strong future. There’s always work to be done, and as long as people need heating, cooling, plumbing, and electricity, this industry will thrive.

Looking ahead, I see a future where we continue to integrate technology with hands-on expertise to create even better solutions for our customers. I see an industry that adapts to changing energy needs, sustainability goals, and evolving customer expectations.

At its core, though, this business will always be about people. It’s about the trust we build with our customers and the pride we take in delivering exceptional service. That’s what makes this industry special, and that’s why I’m just as passionate about it today as I was 40 years ago.

What should we know about you?
I lead with empathy, not ego. I don’t have all the answers, but I know how to bring the right people together. Leadership isn’t about control; it’s about collaboration, clearing the path so others can succeed. I set high expectations, hold people accountable, and do the same for myself. I believe kindness is strength, not weakness, and inspiration is more powerful than pressure. People give their best when they feel valued, so I lead by empowering them. At the end of the day, success isn’t about me; it’s about the team, the culture, and the impact we make together.

How did you get to your current position?
My journey at Lee Company is proof that the possibilities here are endless. I started in 1995 as one of five service technicians, focused on solving problems and delivered great customer experiences. Through hard work, innovation, and a drive to improve, I took on new responsibilities, moving from hands-on service to leadership roles in operations, sales, and strategic planning. With expertise in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and facility maintenance, I’ve helped shape our company’s growth while getting the opportunity to mentor our next generation. My career is proof that at Lee Company, if you’re willing to learn and lead, the opportunities never stop.

What value do you see in Chamber involvement?
Chamber involvement is about connection, growth, and impact. For me, it’s not just networking; it’s about building relationships with leaders who care about their businesses and communities. The chamber brings people together to solve problems, share ideas, and create opportunities. It helps businesses grow, strengthens local economies, and fosters collaboration. I believe in surrounding myself with smart, driven people, and the chamber provides that space. When businesses, leaders, and communities support each other, everyone wins. That’s why chamber involvement is so valuable.

What is your leadership style? How does that motivate yourself and your team?
I believe leadership is about serving others, not controlling them. My approach is team-centric and collaborative, focused on empowering people rather than directing them. I don’t see leadership as a top-down structure where one person makes all the decisions. Instead, I believe in surrounding myself with talented individuals, putting them in the right positions, and giving them the resources and freedom to excel. My role isn’t to have all the answers; it’s to create an environment where the best ideas rise to the top.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is that leadership is about walking alongside your team, not standing above them. I’m not afraid to roll up my sleeves, get involved, and work through challenges with the people I lead. I set high expectations because I believe people perform at their best when they have a clear vision and feel supported. But I also hold myself to those same standards. Accountability starts with me. If I expect my team to push for excellence, I have to lead by example.

At the same time, I believe in leading with empathy and understanding. Kindness is often mistaken for weakness, but in reality, it’s one of the greatest strengths a leader can have. People want to work hard for leaders who value them, listen to them, and respect them. That doesn’t mean I lower my expectations or avoid tough conversations. It means I approach them with fairness and perspective. People respond to inspiration, not intimidation, and when they feel valued, they don’t just meet expectations … they exceed them.

I believe in empowering my team so they take ownership of their work. The best results don’t come from micromanagement; they come from people who feel trusted and responsible for their contributions. When people feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves, they bring their best every day; not because they have to, but because they want to. That sense of ownership creates passion, drive, and commitment, which are far more powerful than any directive.

To me, leadership is also about thinking beyond execution. Being great at the technical side of the job is important, but true leadership requires vision, creativity, and problem-solving. It’s about challenging the status quo, asking “what’s next?” and finding new ways to grow and improve. A leader clears the path for their team, helping them see opportunities they might not have considered and giving them the tools to reach their full potential.

At the end of the day, leadership isn’t about me; it’s about the people around me. My job is to provide clarity, direction, and opportunity. If I can inspire my team, hold them accountable, and set them up for success, then I’ve done my job. When they win, we all win.

What makes Nashville a great place to do business?
Nashville is special. It’s a city where business thrives, people support each other, and community matters. I’ve been here for 30+ years and have watched it grow from a mid-sized Southern town into one of the most vibrant cities in the country. But even with all that growth, Nashville has never lost its soul. It still feels welcoming, still carries that deep sense of Southern hospitality, and still values relationships over transactions.

What makes this city stand out is the balance it strikes. It competes with major metro areas but keeps its own identity. It’s a place where businesses of all sizes can succeed, where families can raise their kids with good values, and where people genuinely care about making a difference. And of course, music is in our DNA—that creative energy is woven into everything we do. It drives innovation, passion, and a sense of community that’s hard to find anywhere else.

One of the things I love most about Nashville is its culture of giving. This is a place where people step up for each other, where businesses and individuals get involved, and where success isn’t just measured by profits, but by the impact you make.

For me, that’s what business should be about; finding ways to give back, support people, and create opportunities for others. I’ve always believed that when you invest in people, whether through mentorship, education, or simply showing up when someone needs help, you create a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community.

I’m especially passionate about helping people build careers in skilled trades. Nashville is growing fast, and we need great people in HVAC, plumbing, electrical work, and facility maintenance. That’s why I believe in supporting trade education and workforce development; ensuring the next generation has opportunities to build strong, fulfilling careers and contribute to the city’s continued success.

That’s also why our program, Lee Company Cares, is so important to me. Business should be about more than just work. It should be about impact. Our focus is on health and wellbeing, second chances, and food insecurity, because when we invest in people, we strengthen entire communities. I’ve seen firsthand how opportunity changes lives; whether it’s helping someone build a career, supporting veterans transitioning into civilian life, or providing for those in need. It’s about coming together to create something bigger than ourselves. That’s what drives me, and that’s why giving back will always be a priority.

And the best part? Nashville is a city full of possibilities. Whether you’re starting a business, growing your career, or looking for ways to give back, the opportunities here are endless. The combination of economic growth, community spirit, and strong local leadership makes this an incredible place to live, work, and do business.

At the end of the day, business in Nashville isn’t just about business … it’s about being part of something bigger. That’s why I love this city, and that’s why I believe its future is brighter than ever.

What are key trends in your industry?
The industry is evolving, and business owners, building owners, and property managers are thinking differently about their investments. They’re seeing their facilities not just as structures but as long-term assets that need to be maintained and optimized for efficiency, longevity, and cost savings. The days of reactive maintenance are shifting. People are looking for smarter, data-driven ways to manage their buildings.

One of the biggest trends we’re seeing is the increased demand for building intelligence and predictive analytics. Business owners want real-time insights into their buildings’ efficiency; whether it’s HVAC performance, energy usage, lighting, or plumbing functionality. They want to know: How long can I expect my building to breathe and live? How do I extend the life of my systems? Where am I wasting energy or water? These are the kinds of questions that drive investment decisions now.

Technology is a big part of the shift. With remote monitoring, predictive analytics, and automation, we can decrease downtime, reduce costs, and improve efficiency before problems even happen. Instead of waiting for a system to fail, we can detect small inefficiencies and proactively make adjustments; saving businesses money and reducing disruptions. Water conservation and energy efficiency are also top of mind. Maximizing resources is no longer optional. It’s essential for both financial and environmental sustainability.

But technology alone isn’t enough. It takes the right people to make sense of the data and provide actionable insights. That’s why collaboration is key. We don’t just provide services; we build partnerships with our customers. We help them understand their buildings at a deeper level so they can make informed decisions. We offer expertise in lighting upgrades, HVAC optimization, water conservation, and overall system efficiency, ensuring that their buildings operate as tools that serve their business and not as constant expenses draining resources.

Another major trend is workforce development. Our industry requires highly skilled, technical professionals, and we’ve made it a priority to invest in the next generation. We don’t just hire the best … we develop them. One of our key focuses is a hire-to-retire mentality, meaning we promote from within and give people the opportunity to grow in their careers. You don’t have to be the best technician today, but if you’re coachable, open to learning, and ready to grow, we’ll help you get there. The industry needs all kinds of skill sets, from hands-on technicians to data analysts and system designers.

At the end of the day, the goal is to help businesses focus on what they do best, while we take care of their facilities. With the right technology, expertise, and strategic partnerships, businesses can extend the life of their assets, lower expenses, and create more sustainable, efficient environments. That’s where the industry is headed, and it’s an exciting time to be a part of it.

What was the first concert you ever attended? What is the best live show you’ve seen in Nashville?
Music has always been a big part of my life, and over the years, I’ve been lucky enough to see some incredible live performances. There’s just something about being in the moment, letting the music take over, and appreciating true musicianship that makes a concert unforgettable.

The first concert I ever attended was Randy Travis and Alabama at a state fair … a classic introduction to live music. I remember the excitement of being there, the energy of the crowd, and the way the music just filled the air. There’s something special about seeing legendary artists perform in an open setting, where the music blends with the sounds of the fair. I knew I was experiencing something great. That show was my first taste of live music, and it hooked me for life.

Now, I’ve seen a lot of concerts, and I love all genres of music. But the best show I’ve ever seen in Nashville, the one that truly stood out, was Jackson Browne and James Taylor! It wasn’t a traditional concert with flashing lights, massive productions, or crazy stage effects. Instead, it was low-key, intimate, and stripped down. Just pure talent on stage. They sat with their guitars and played every song you could sing along to. It wasn’t about the spectacle; it was about the music itself.

That’s what made it phenomenal and memorable for me. The way they performed, you weren’t just listening; you were in it. There were no distractions, no over-the-top effects, just two legendary artists who took you somewhere else with their music. It was the kind of show where you just sit back, smile, and feel good because you’re experiencing something real.

I’m an avid concert-goer, and I appreciate all genres, but what really draws me in is true talent. There’s something about musicians who don’t need anything extra; just their voice, their instrument, and their ability to connect with the audience. That’s when music becomes more than just sound … it becomes an experience.

Great concerts do something that’s hard to explain. They take you to another place. You’re not thinking about work, your to-do list, or anything else. You’re just in the music. That’s what makes live shows unforgettable.

Whether it’s a massive stadium concert or a small, intimate show, there’s nothing quite like experiencing pure music in the moment. And in a city like Nashville, you don’t have to look far to find that magic.
