Who is J. Starling Strategy & Financial Consulting?
J. Starling Strategy & Financial Consulting is a post-award financial strategy practice focused on helping institutions build the infrastructure required to responsibly manage federal funding. Our work sits at the intersection of governance, compliance, and operational design, ensuring that institutions not only secure funding, but are structurally equipped to steward it with clarity and accountability.

What makes your business unique?
What sets the firm apart is its focus on institutional thinking. Rather than addressing isolated challenges, the work looks at how systems, governance, financial structures, and operations function together. The goal is to build environments where performance is not dependent on individuals alone but supported by intentional, repeatable systems.

How do you stay informed about industry trends and changes?
I stay informed through a combination of academic research, applied work, and direct engagement with organizations across different sectors.

Because my work sits at the intersection of strategy, finance, and operations, it requires constant awareness of regulatory changes, funding structures, and evolving operational demands. Remaining close to both theory and practice ensures that the work remains relevant and effective.

What do you want to be known for?
I want to be known for bringing clarity, structure, and accountability to organizations at critical stages of growth.
More specifically, I want to be known for helping businesses build the internal infrastructure that allows them to operate with confidence, make informed decisions, and sustain long-term success.

What are some lessons you have learned as a business leader?
A significant lesson I’ve learned is that growth without structure creates pressure, not progress.

Many organizations pursue expansion without fully understanding the internal demands that come with it.

Without the right systems, controls, and accountability in place, growth begins to expose weaknesses rather than create opportunity. Sustainable success requires intentional structure at every stage.

What are some new markets or demographics you are targeting?
While the work has strong alignment with research institutions and federally funded environments, I am increasingly engaging with capacity-constrained organizations, including emerging research institutions and mission-driven organizations, who are navigating growing compliance and operational demands without proportional infrastructure.

Why Nashville?
The Nashville region presents a unique combination of growth, opportunity, and access.
There is a strong presence of both emerging and established organizations, which creates an environment where strategy and structure are increasingly important. The pace of growth in the region makes it an ideal place for businesses that are focused on building with intention rather than reacting to expansion.
